Why with all of our spiritual traditions teaching unconditional love do we have so many conditions on love? Unconditional love by definition is love without conditions. No matter what someone has done we still love them. Conditional love on the other hand is ‘earned’ on the basis of conscious or unconscious conditions being met by the other person. Our society places a lot of conditions on how we should love. How can we work together to break this bondage of conditioned love?
Here are some practices to help you let go of conditions you may have on love.
- Notice when you do feel love. Like holding a baby or a pet. Give yourself permission to feel and be in the love with no conditions.
- Notice when you make judgements on others. These are conditions you place on them. Sit with your conditions and allow yourself to feel them. Then ask why do I have these conditions?
- Practice dropping into your heart each day by feeling gratitude. Start with a practice in the morning then 21 days later, add one at lunch, then 21 days later add one at bedtime. Eventually you will be begin to cultivate this vibration of gratitude all the time.
